Parish Notes

TODAY / June 29 / Peter and Paul, Apostles

NEXT SUNDAY / July 6 / Eighth Sunday After Pentecost
– Sermon Preview: “Come to me.” Today the front stained glass window at St. Luke’s comes to life. In the Gospel, Jesus declares, “Come to me, all….” His invitation extends God’s compassion and mercy described in the Psalm and includes even the “prisoners of hope” mentioned in Zephaniah. Jesus’ invitation includes all – even us.

THIS MORNING WE WELCOME BACK OUR ST. LUKE'S TRAVELERS from their journey to the Middle East. You may still encounter their journey by visiting their blog at http://www.stlukespr.org/onholyground click on the journal link, and enter the password “Moses.”

THE ASSOCIATION OF LUTHERAN CHURCH MUSICIANS (ALCM) REGIONAL CONFERENCE is being held at Concordia University in River Forest today through July 2. Pastor Stephen and Anne Krentz Organ are both participating in the conference. Anne will be leading a choral reading session at Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest and Pastor Stephen will be preaching at the worship service held at Augustana Lutheran Church in Hyde Park.

PROSPECTIVE AND NEW MEMBER CLASSES CONTINUE TODAY AT 11:15 a.m. The next session will be held on Sunday, July 13 (not July 6). Those who decide to become members of St. Luke’s will be received on Sunday, July 20. (The next sequence of classes will be held beginning in October.)

CONGRATULATIONS TO PASTOR THOMAS CHRISTELL, JR., son of Arline Christell, who celebrates the 25th anniversary of his ordination today.

OUR SUMMER SUNDAY WORSHIP SCHEDULE CONTINUES THROUGH THE SUMMER. Sunday morning worship is 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. (and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m.). Please note our Thursday worship service has an earlier start time this year. We’ll return to the 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. schedule on Rally Day, September 7. (Thursday evening summer worship will conclude on August 28.)

DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS members are encouraged to worship at St. Luke's on either Thursday at 7:00 p.m. or at the services on Sunday morning. As you travel, worship where you are and encounter God with another community of faith. When at St. Luke's please present your offering as a part of the worship experience. If you can not be present, please mail your offering to the church so that we may have the financial resources to carry out our ministries.

MEMBERS WHO HAVE NOT PLEDGED to the "Growing in Faith" capital fund campaign are asked to get their commitment to the church no later than this Tuesday, July 1.

THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY 9:30–10:30 A.M. This week’s text is Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30.

SUMMER MOVIE SERIES – Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in Fox Hall. Summertime and the livin’ is easy. Fish are jumpin’ and the weather is.............oh wait, that’s another discussion. What IS for discussion this summer are three interesting films. The Adult Ed team invites you to join us some Wednesday evenings in June, July and August. Each month a film will be viewed and discussed in two-week sessions. Refreshments will also be served! Our second summer movie, shown on July 9, will be: “The Invisible.” Join us as we watch this 97 minute film about Nick, a high school senior with a bright future until, in a tragic case of mistaken identity, he is brutally attacked by a troubled girl and his body is left for dead. Now in limbo, not quite dead but invisible to the living, his spirit can only watch as his mother and the police search frantically for him, unaware that he is only hours away from truly perishing. A discussion of the film, “The Invisible,” will take place the following week on July 16. Paula Berger will lead the discussion.

FROM THE LIBRARY. In the Psychology category, we have a new resource recently donated to our library that may be just what you are looking for. From Augsburg Press, Defeating Depression: Real help for you and those who love you by Howard W. Stone, provides a wealth of information that is authoritative, practical, and current. It covers the most intense emotions and feelings associated with depression, and clarifies the return to vitality. Managing your Mind: The mental fitness guide, by Gillian Butler, Ph.D. and Tony Hope, M.D., helps the reader develop his full potential, attaining the skills and attitudes needed to become more effective and more personally fulfilled in daily life. The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmund J. Bourne explains the causes and nature of anxiety disorders and describes the various treatments currently available. An excellent resource.

MONARCH BUTTERFULY CATERPILLARS. Would you like to raise a caterpillar until it changes into a monarch butterfly? Iris Henderson can give you a caterpillar in a plastic container, milkweed to feed it and an instruction sheet. You will need to feed it daily for about a week before it forms its chrysalis. About 8 - 12 days after the chrysalis forms, the monarch butterfly will emerge. See Iris at St. Luke’s on Sundays or Thursday evenings or contact her at 847-823-1828 or at jphend@juno.com to get your caterpillar.

LUTHERAN DISASTER RESPONSE is on the scene in post-tornado ravaged sections of the USA. LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF is on the scene in China and trying to get aid in to Myanmar. If you would like to contribute to these disaster responses, make your check payable to St. Luke’s and write on the Memo Line the particular event for which you wish to contribute.

PLEASE DON’T MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR FIRST TUESDAY MEN’S BREAKFAST IN JULY, AUGUST OR SEPTEMBER. The group’s next meeting will be on October 7. At this point, we have no speakers for any of our next get-togethers. Do you know of someone that would be a good candidate? If so, give Howie Thorsson (847/698-0152) or Don Rusch (847/825-3673) a call. We’d be thrilled to have them join our group some Tuesday morning! Are you letting the fact that you don’t drive anymore or have access to a car keep you from sharing in the fellowship (and sausages and flapjacks too!)? Well don’t! Just give Howie Thorsson or Don Rusch a call. They’ll be happy to make sure you get to the gathering. And, since we like to spread the fun around, bring a friend. The more the merrier! See you in October!

A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR AMY BURROWS AND THE VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS who turned Fox Hall into a forest of camping fun! Joseph, Zacchaeus, Jonah and the Good Samaritan taught us about God’s gifts of forgiveness, grace, faithfulness and kindness. 52 children and over 35 volunteers made the week a joy. Check out the “thank you” poster to see the names of the many people who so graciously volunteered their time.

DON’T BE DISAPPOINTED! The deadline for any information that needs to be included in the upcoming week’s Parish Notes is Monday at 9:00 a.m. (sorry, no exceptions). Here are some helpful tips to make it easier for you to submit announcements for either the Messenger and/or the bulletin:

  1. Type (preferable) or print your announcement clearly.
  2. Provide your name and a daytime contact number in case we have any questions.
  3. Indicate Messenger and/or bulletin and, in the case of the bulletin, the Sunday(s) you would like the information to appear.
  4. In order to conserve paper, inserts and announcements will appear in the bulletin for a two-week period only. (The weeks need not be consecutive.) Please indicate which two Sundays you would like the information to appear and please submit it in a “camera-ready” format. Thank you!
